Who Called Me From 888-296-0988?
THIS IS A FRAUD!! They are trying to scam you and get you to give them your credit card number, by sending a text message and posing as Citibank's fraud early warning department. BEWARE!!!
I got a text from 95686 claiming to be from Citibank fraud asking me to call 888-296-0988. I ignored it. Next while I was online checking my account and it not letting me in I got a call from 800-386-6624. They asked me about a transaction on my card which was fraud. Then they asked about two other transactions. Also fraud. I told them the last date I used the card, they confirmed that transaction and amount correctly.
They never asked me for card number, but did ask me to confirm my address and phone number at the end of the call. They had convinced me they were legit by then.
Got a text from CitiCard Fraud Department. They wanted to speak about my recent account activity and call them on 888-296-0988. I didn't recognize the number but I did call the number on the back of my credit card. As it turned out, I did get transferred to the Fraud Department and I did have recent fraudulent activity. IT IS NOT A SCAM, but I recommend always calling the number listed on the back of the card. They will get you to the correct party.
THIS IS NOT A FRAUD. I got a text from Citibank and just to make sure it was them, I called the number on the back of my credit card. I told them about the text and they said it was, indeed, them and that one of their vendors has reported that their numbers had been compromised. Consequently, a new card was issued just to PREVENT future fraudulent activity. Always call the number on the back of your card when in doubt.
Al: This is not fraud, I called the number on the back of my card. I suggest everyone do the same. As above a new card was issued 4 years ago
THIS IS NOT A FRAUDULENT NUMBER. You need to call it and get your credit cards closed. You've had fraud on your account.
Patti: Joanne, you must work for the fraudulent people. This number is NOT linked to Citibank. I have received 2 voicemails asking me to call that number to verify recent charges. Well guess what? There are no recent charges as I haven't used my card for several weeks now! I checked my account online to be sure and do not plan on calling that crazy number for anything.
Beware people! 4 years ago
mm: The text message says 1."citicards" which is a red flag. 2 it gives a phone no. To call (no credit card co. Will do this, they would tell you to call the no. Located on the back of your card. Long story short they do not contact you this way. No bank would. Also Citibank told me that it is a scam. Hell it warns about them on their website.
Those who defend it are in the scam, because it is a common tactic to flood blogs with " this is legit" or the is "not fraudulent" even if they tell you good advise like call the number on your card. This is also a tactic to make you feel comfortable,
notice they give a somewhat positive experience first.
and to those who believe that is legit that have nothing to do with this type of scam. Don't be naive. It is a scam

It's legit... I was skeptical after reading through posts above, but went online to look up the Citi customer service number and indeed the fraud department had detected unauthorized usage of my account.
This is scam. I just called Citicards using the number on the back of my card and they said there has been no attempt to call or text me about my account. always call the number on the back of your card.
Marianne: TOTALLY LEGIT! I got an email stating fraudulent activity in the amount of $813 at Walgreens. I didn't reply thru the email's contact phone number (because I was suspicious) but instead called the number ON THE BACK OF MY CITICARD. After punching in my card number after the prompt, I was automatically connected with the Citibank Fraud department and was informed that YES, there was an $813 transaction on my card. The card was then closed and I am being issued a new card.
If you get this email or text, just call the number on your Citibank card. It takes two minutes and can save you a fortune. 4 years ago
Katy: FRAUD!! Called the number on my card NOT the one in the text. Was transferred to Citibank's Fraud Department. They told me that this is a phishing scam and that "(888) 296-0988 is not one of there numbers. Those who say it's not a scam are part of it! 3 years ago
This is a fraud. Call the number on the back of your card.
After I called this number to verify fraudulent activity on my card, I call the number on the back of the card to make sure I wasn't duped. Citibank said it was legit.
After receiving text, I called the number on the back of my credit card (not number texted). I did have charges I had not made on my card. Citibank had declined the charges and canceled card. I told them about text, especially as they do not have my cell phone number. They told me the text was fraud because they did not have my cell phone number on file (I had never given it to them). Very very strange altogether!
While you may have a legit fraudulent charge, this may be a scam. Always call the number on the back of your card, rather than using the number provided via phone call or text. No credit card company should be calling you and asking for your info. I read another article about this, and I wonder if maybe someone gets your cc number, makes a purchase, then puts the scam in motion. I dunno, could be just a crazy idea. In any case, just be safe and use the number on your card!!!
Got a call from 888-296-0988 said it was fraud dept. It was legit. But I did call the number on the back of my cc just to be sure.
Same here, we first called the # in the text, thought it sounded fishy so hung up and called the # on the card. There WAS a fraudulent charge and we are getting a new card issued. From now on if I get a similar text I will just call the # on my card right away insted.
Same thing happened to me and it did sound fishy, so I called the number on the back of the card and it was legit. Made me feel much better. Account was closed and new card issued.
I also got a text saying its Citi Fraud and to call that number-- I called the number on the back of my CITI card and was told it was an actual fraud prevention message--- THIS IS REAL-, Its not fraud- but to be safe, I would always just called the number on the back of my credit card first and let them transfer me to fraud department
Eric: Definitely not a scam. As mentioned above, it's always a good idea to call the phone number on the back of your card. I did this yesterday and was routed to citi's fraud group. No fraud at this point, but my card was identified as one of the thousand that have been compromised in recent data breaches. 3 years ago
