They sent a card making it look like it is from the water department asking to call back within 3 days because they have been unable to reach me.
I researched the number and found someone who contacted the Department of Water and Sewer and they told her it was a scam.

Jane Doe:

Got a call from this number. When I picked up, the line was silent. They called back and left a message. I blocked the phone number because 1) my name is not Willie and 2) the number they called was my cell phone. This is a fraudulent call. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY AND HAVE THIS NUMBER BLOCKED.

"This message is intended for Willie Snap. Willie, as soon as you receive this message, I need you or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time-sensitive. My name is {unintelligible} and the hotline to my division is 415 952 5630. I repeat it's 415 952 5630. Don't disregard this message and do return the call. Now, if you don't return the call and we don't hear from your attorney either, the only thing I can do is wish you good luck as this situation unfolds on you. Goodbye."

They claim to be a debt collector that has bought my account from HSBC...that of which has been written off over 5 years ago. State of alabama statute is 3 years to collect. They need to get their facts straight.

Nothing that you do will stop them from calling you. The calls will continue since the major money is being made with what is called a CNAM revenue-sharing program through companies like http://www.telephonemanagement.net and http://www.CallerID4U.com.
If you want to stop these calls then you need to dry up their revenue source. These scum are making money by sending bogus Caller ID information to your phone company. Telephone numbers are Calling Name (CNAM) provisioned and stored in a special database accessible to other telecom utilities. This means that for any outbound call that transmits a special code corresponding to one of their phone numbers, these criminals collect a fee for transmitting the caller ID information to the Local Exchange Carrier receiving the call. When you see a phone number in your caller ID (along with some name like Card Services), your phone company has to reimburse the caller for downloading that info from the database where it’s stored.
They are making money even if you don't answer the phone. If someone does make the mistake of answering the phone and falling for their con then it is just icing on the cake for them.

What To Do When You Get an Illegal Robocall; http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/robocalls
1. Hang Up. Do not press 1 or any other numbers to get off the list.
2. Consider blocking the number
3. Report it at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints
4. Report it at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov
5. People should continually file complaints with their Attorney Generals office.
Register your phone numbers online at http://www.donotcall.gov or call (888) 382-1222 (must call from # you want removed).

Here is an excellent blog site that I found that explains how these companies are getting away with this activity. http://telemarketerspam.wordpress.com

Received two calls from this number yesterday with no message. Anyone know who it is?

They claimed to need to talk to one of us right away, left no name, but implied something very threatening. I'm very certain they are, likely, con and scam artists. They need to be reported to the FTC, and we need to keep many recordings to shut them down.

Mystery Woman:

Some guy by the name of Phillip Larson along with someone else just started calling me after January 1st. I do not know why they are calling me, and continually leave the message that they are going to garnish my wages. For what? I don't know these people and do not have any outstanding debt. These people are threatening and I want it to stop. The other phone number is 302-565-4561 that I got from their website. Very unethical and very threatening, but they don't scare me.

The caller probably a scammer. Warning!!!

The caller says he is Joe Vayzahn (?), but the caller I.D. says Justin Adams. He claims he found my resume on Monster but does not say what company he is calling from. He merely says, "an exciting opportunity." Has anyone had a similar call? Or can anyone verify the validity of this call? It seems like a scam. Especially since he did not disclose where he was calling from. I get similar ads in my email saying they have an "exciting opportunity" but then find out they are credit scams. I would appreciate any help anyone could provide.

I just want everyone to kow that all of this needs to stop. And you are not alone.

This phone number belongs to a scammer that is supposedly recruiting people as mystery shoppers. Sends fraudulent bank checks over $2,000. Tells them to keep $200 for their salary and then spend $20 at some retail establishment. They are then to wire remainig money (which typically over $2,000) by Western Union to two other mystery shoppers in the Phillipines.

Don’t bother to call the FTC or fill out the complaint forms. They’re a bunch of jackoffs and they won’t do one damned thing to help you. They don’t really have any power to do anything. I got a call from these folks too. I know how the rest of you guys feel and perhaps I can suggest a solution. If you are willing to pay the price you can stop these calls. Call blocking as it is currently available from service providers is not useful since they only allow you to block about 5-10 numbers. At least that's all AT&T will do. I decided this wasn't good enough and did some research. If you want to spend the money, you can buy a device that will block up to 80 numbers from calling you. It is called a DIGITONE call blocker and it runs about one hundred dollars, and can be purchased from DIGITONE COMMUNICATIONS at 6501 E. Greenway Parkway. Ste. 103-622, Scottsdale, AZ 85254 They can be reached by phone during business hours at: 1-877-610-5693 or visit their website at www.digitone.com. This device saved my peace and quiet and will do the same for you. If you don't want to spend the hundred dollars, then there's not a whole lot you can do, but there is one thing that might help. Some of these bozos have not set their autodialing programs to take care of this particular tactic. Go on the internet and download a WAV file of the Special Information Tone. This is that annoying series of 3 notes that you hear if a number has been disconnected. Set your answering machine to answer after two rings(this is very important) and then record that tone as your answering message. If you are lucky, then they will not have turned off the feature that listens for this tone and deletes disconnected numbers. This only works about 1/3 of the time but it's worth a try if you don't want to spend any money.

These idiots from TELSTAR HOSTED @ 209-593-5814 call 10 or more times per day and leave no message and have called for the last several months! I actually picked up the telephone today, and a man said you can save on your PG&E bill. I interrupted him and told him that we are on the "FEDERAL REGISTRY OF DO NOT CALL LIST" and to stop calling my phone in a belligerent voice! He said, "We are NOT a telemarketer You don't need to yell at me". I stated emphatically, "If you call my number again, I will sue your company". He said that he would remove my phone number (and as we all know, the "DO NOT CALL LIST" is a waste of taxpayer money! Thanks, for the "FEDERAL DO NOT CALL LIST" congress!

I received a text from 646-580-4731. This is a guy that offered to buy and item that I was selling on Craigslist for $300. He sent me a cashiers check for $2500 and wants me to keep the $300 for the item and an extra $100 for my trouble, then wire him the remaining $2100. I told him I cashed the check and he has been bugging me through email to wire him the money. Now he got my cell phone number and has texted me to wire him the money. I have been playing him along for several weeks now. I guess I should stop it and just tell him to go to hell. I hope nobody falls for this piece of sh*t's scam. He uses very broken english.
