Total SCAM. The recording I received from an anonymous/restricted caller stated, " Hello, this is an important message about the legal status of your account. As recently instructed by the Attorney General of the State, this must be resolved immediately. Please call back at (347) 650-2132. Once again, that number is (347) 650-2132. You must call back right now."
The telephone number is for a phone registered in Westbury, NY (Long Island) controlled by "VoIP - Level 3 Communications." No further information is available from public records.
I entertained calling them and did so. This is a synopsis of the conversation I had with the scammer: The person with a heavy Indian accent sounded like he was in a call center. He said he was calling on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service. After confirming that my number was the one that was called, he confirmed my name and address (public information of course!). Then he informed me in a long diatribe that I had an error on my 2012 taxes and that the IRS has sent agents to my address three times to try to serve notice(!). They even claim they left a green card at my door but I never responded. So before the IRS takes the next steps which could mean going to jail for 6 months and the cancelling of all my credit cards, this company was going to try to resolve my tax debt (due to error, not due to not filing). He even stated that if I hung up the phone, it would automatically be traced and a 911 alert would go out to send someone over to arrest me now.
Wow! What a crock! Of course this is totally a scam (and for me a little entertaining). I then told them that my brother was a State Trooper and would look into this phone call personally. The person on the other line hung up abruptly.
Yep, a total scam. Unfortunately, there must be some people out there that fall for these, otherwise they wouldn't keep calling.
